JUDGING
• Entries in each category will be reviewed separately and judged by the members of the Coatesville
Historical Society.
• Historical Society members may submit photos for the contest. Any member that does will be
excluded from the judging process.
• Photographs will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, composition, and how
an image expresses the theme of the selected category. Refer to the criteria in the section below for
more help.
• The judges will select the Top 3 photos from each of the 8 categories (total of 24).
• Of the 24 winners, the judges will also select their Top 3 from the group of 24 for a special prize.
• The winners in each category will be notified by email by no later than May 12th, 2021.
The Top 3 will be announced at a special event in June 2021.
• The Historical Society members are not, nor do they claim to be, professional judges with experience
in judging photography. Please keep this in mind and make sure your photo meets the criteria above.
You want your photo to reach out and pull them in - to get their attention!
• If more judges are required, CDR and/or Town Officials may sit in with the Historical Society to
assist with the judging process.
JUDGES CRITERIA (PHOTO HINTS)
What are the judges really looking for? The following hints may help you with your photography.
Storytelling - The photo should tell a story or make the viewer curious about the events surrounding the moment of the photo.
Quality - Winning photos are free of problems with exposure, sharpness or noise.
Showstoppers - Judges will be stopped by powerful images. Look for pictures with good actions, reactions and emotions, interesting lighting, peak action, unusual and different situations and storytelling moments.
Originality - Photos that are only slightly different from existing images more than likely won't be selected. Be original and unique!
Thoughtfulness - Sending multiple copies of the same image or similar images is not a successful technique. Send us your single best image of a subject. Crop your photo for maximum impact before submitting.
